“You're coming up on Grantown's town square, with Grantown Museum tucked behind the Town House. I'd stop if you enjoy small local-history museums; this is a compact, seasonal visit rather than a large collection.”

More about Grantown Museum

A compact local-history stopGrantown Museum is a small local-history museum in Burnfield House, a former girls’ school…

Grantown Museum is a small local-history museum in Burnfield House, a former girls’ school behind the Town House on the Square at the north end of Grantown-on-Spey. Its permanent galleries follow the town from its planned founding in 1775 into its Victorian years. Come for a focused Highland heritage visit rather than a large, all-day collection; visitors often praise the knowledgeable staff, though the compact scale can feel brief for a paid admission. The museum also works as a local visitor information point, with free information about the surrounding area.

The displays trace Grantown’s foundation by Sir James Grant, remembered as “Good Sir James,” through its Enlightenment-era growth, local industries and inventions, and its years as a Victorian retreat. Look for the Cromdale Brooch, a brass Celtic-style piece found at the old battlefield in nearby Cromdale. The museum dates it to around the 1690s; at more than four inches across, it may have fastened a woman’s shawl. A separately arranged costume experience offers a more hands-on way into the period, with staff helping visitors dress in historical clothing.

Captain John Grant, a Strathspey factor, provided for a girls’ school in his will. Burnfield House was built in 1861, and the school opened the following year with 63 pupils. By 1875 it was built for 140 but held 172. It closed in 1890 after changes to the school system, and the house later served as a private home, café and bed-and-breakfast. The Heritage Trust bought it in 1995; the museum opened here in 1999. Outside, a small campanile added in 2006 houses the restored town bell.
