Knock Castle

This roofless, four-storey 16th-century tower house stands on Knock Hill, just west of Ballater and south of the River Dee. It’s a quiet, brief stop for people who enjoy ruined castles: the surviving height and hilltop setting are the draw. The approach is poorly documented, though, so I’d check current access before making a detour.

A walk from Ballater, starting at the Old Royal Station, is described as an option, but the route, public access arrangements and parking permission aren’t clearly confirmed. Recent visitors warn of a rough farm track and unclear parking. Don’t plan to drive up or enter the tower unless local guidance confirms the approach and structure are safe. No visitor facilities are listed at the ruin.

The hilltop gives broad views across the surrounding countryside and toward the Highlands. Trees can screen some views back toward Ballater. For a photo, include the stone enclosure and grassy slope around the tower; they show its setting and make its height easier to read.

Knock was one of a group of towers positioned to dominate important valleys and crossings around the Dee and Avon; nearby Drumin had the same strategic role. The hilltop position helps explain why the ruin stands apart from Ballater.

The roof is gone, but the walls remain to wallhead height. A vaulted basement and spiral turnpike stair survive. A separate mound a short distance west is thought to be the site of Old Castle Knock, possibly a 12th-century timber stronghold linked to the Earls of Mar. Treat that older site as a possibility, not a settled identification.
