Trail guide
Craigendarroch Summit Trail is a strenuous circuit from Station Square, climbing through oakwood to the summit and returning to Ballater. The current route listing gives 2 miles (3.2 km) and allows 2 hours; the published route line stops short of Station Square, and a connected walking return makes the full mapped loop about 2.2 miles (3.5 km). Follow the Summit signs: the separate Craigendarroch Circular contours around the hill, while a longer variant adds a traverse above the Pass of Ballater.
From Station Square, head along Braemar Road toward Braemar for about 350 metres, pass the old kirk, then take the signed Craigendarroch Walk and the left fork into the oakwood. At the uphill marker, take the steep zigzags rather than the path around the hill. The climb eases briefly before a signed junction; take the Summit branch. Higher up, oak gives way to Scots pine and birch, and the path turns rockier with steps. Follow Summit waymarkers on the steep far-side descent, then the village footways back to the square.
The large cairn and its plaque look over Ballater’s grid of streets and the River Dee. Continue to the true summit for a bench and a viewpoint indicator. In clear weather, the line of sight reaches Lochnagar’s northern corrie and cliffs. At the cairn, frame some of Ballater and the Dee below so the height of the viewpoint comes through.
Craigendarroch translates as “rocky hill of the oaks.” The old oakwood was coppiced for cartwheel timber until the 18th century; the walk climbs through the same kind of woodland before the higher pines and birches take over.
Station Square, beside Ballater’s restored Old Railway Station, is the access and parking point. The mapped return uses village paths and sidewalks, including a short stretch beside Braemar Road. Dogs are allowed; keep them close, especially from April through August and near livestock, and follow local signs.
