Hiking Seven Bridges Walk, Ballater
The loopSeven Bridges Walk is a moderate 5.
Seven Bridges Walk is a moderate 5.5-mile circular walk from Station Square in Ballater, usually about 3¼ hours. It links the village with the River Dee, woodland and a stretch of the former railway line, passing Polhollick suspension bridge before returning over Ballater’s Royal Bridge. Some itineraries add Knock Castle; that spur is outside this 5.5-mile loop.

From Station Square, follow the lanes toward Invercauld Road and the old railway corridor, then continue by Bridge of Gairn to Polhollick. Cross the white iron suspension bridge and head east through Dalliefour Wood and past Bridge of Muick before returning through the village over Royal Bridge. Most of the walk is on earthy or surfaced paths, but there are narrow rough and rocky patches, steps, bridges and short stretches on or across roads. Follow the waymarkers and take care where the path meets traffic.

Polhollick is the signature crossing: its open suspension bridge carries the route across the Dee, with the river and wooded banks visible around it. Near Bridge of Gairn, the trail follows part of Ballater’s former railway alignment; an extension toward Braemar was planned but never completed. Dalliefour Wood brings a quieter, wooded stretch before the village streets and Royal Bridge close the loop.
