Ballater Old Royal Station is the rebuilt railway terminus in the centre of Ballater, now a heritage stop with royal-railway displays, a café and a public library. It was the closest station to Balmoral, and is an easy place to fold into a wander around the village if you like the stories behind the buildings.
The standout exhibits are Queen Victoria’s waiting room and a replica Victorian royal carriage. Storyboards explain the station’s link with Balmoral, and seeing the carriage gives that royal connection something tangible. The station is an appealing short stop even if you only have time to look around the rooms and displays.
The station opened in 1866 as the terminus of a branch line from Aberdeen. Passenger trains stopped in 1966, after more than a century of bringing visitors to this part of Deeside and to Balmoral. It’s now a heritage building, not a working rail stop.
A fire destroyed the station in May 2015. The £4.2 million reconstruction restored the building, including its former British Rail green exterior. The project won the South Eastern Commercial Restoration Award from the Princess Royal in 2019.
Rothesay Rooms incorporates the Royal Deeside Café and serves café and restaurant meals. Its published description highlights Scottish produce, Highland meats and seasonal vegetables. A public library also shares the restored building, so the station still has a place in everyday village life.
