Overview

Loch Brandy is a classic mountain corrie loch perched above Glen Clova on the southern side of the park. The loch sits in a steep, bowl‑shaped amphitheatre carved by ancient glaciers, so you get that big, wild Highland feel without committing to an all‑day expedition.

The Hike

Most people start from near the Glen Clova Hotel car park and follow a clear, constructed hill path straight into the corrie. It’s a short but sustained climb on firm, stony ground—roughly 3.5 miles/5.5 km round trip in 2–3 hours—so expect to earn the views. Many walkers add a brief, steeper pull to The Snub for a dramatic aerial look into the corrie and down Glen Clova. Longer circuits over nearby tops are possible if you want to make a day of it.

Scenery & Geology

This is a textbook corrie: a glacier scooped out the bowl, leaving a steep back‑wall and a moraine “lip” that holds the dark, clear water in place. The setting is spectacular—crags and scree rising from the shoreline, with wide vistas opening back down the glen as you gain height.

Wildlife

The surrounding uplands support red deer, mountain hares, and birds of prey—keep an eye on the skyline for raptors riding the wind. Wildcat denning is associated with the wider area, but sightings are very rare. Ground‑nesting birds use these hills in season, so keep dogs close and stick to the path.

What to Expect at the Loch

There are no facilities at the water—no shelter, toilets, or tables—just a rugged, windy corrie that often feels much colder than the glen. On warm days some visitors take a brisk dip; otherwise it’s a great spot for a snack before continuing higher or heading down.

Safety & Essentials

Weather can flip quickly here. The path, while well‑made, can be wet or icy and slippery after rain. Pack sturdy boots, warm and windproof layers, food and water, and navigation if you’re extending the route. Edges near The Snub are craggy; take extra care in winter conditions.

Park near the Glen Clova Hotel for the most direct start. Expect company on fine days and limited parking, so arrive early at weekends. There are no toilets at the loch; the nearest facilities are down in the glen (hotel for customers, and at Glen Doll Ranger Station).

Clear, settled days reward you with the biggest views. To dodge the busiest periods and secure parking, go early—especially on fine weekends—or aim for quieter weekdays. Summer brings the option of a (cold) swim; winter can be beautiful but harsher underfoot and on the rim.
