Overview

A tiny hike with a big payoff. This 0.3-mile loop (total) sits just off Needles Main Park Road, a short stroll south of the Needles Visitor Center. It’s flat, easy, and over before your water warms up—perfect as a first stop when you roll into the district or a leg-stretcher on your way out.

What You’ll See

You’ll wander across packed desert soil and a bit of slickrock through sage and juniper, with classic Needles sandstone around you. The highlight is a well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan granary—now interpreted as the “Stone Storehouse”—tucked into a shallow alcove above a dry wash. Interpretive signs and a self-guided brochure at the trailhead add helpful context about the structure and the native plants you’re walking past.

Best Time to Hike

Year-round works, but spring and fall bring the friendliest temps. In summer, go early or late to dodge the midday furnace and get softer light on the stonework. Winter can be crisp and quiet, with clear skies and fewer people.
