Walnut Canyon Overlook

Walnut Canyon Overlook is a small viewpoint reached by a paved walkway from a parking lot on the road to the Carlsbad Caverns visitor center. The path is 180 yards, takes about five minutes from the lot to the overlook, and has just 22 feet of elevation change. If you want a look at the dry landscape above ground before heading into the cavern, this is an easy stop; I wouldn’t make a separate trip for it.

The view looks into Walnut Canyon across pale, scrub-covered limestone country. A winding paved road cuts through the open landscape; keep some of it and a strip of rocky foreground in your photo to give the wide plateau a sense of scale. It’s a brief roadside viewpoint, not a hike or a big destination on its own.

The park protects an exposed stretch of the Capitan Reef, a fossil reef formed about 265 million years ago along a shallow inland sea. Sponges and algae built much of it, rather than coral; later uplift and erosion brought the reef back to the surface. That’s the bigger geological story behind this desert landscape, even though there isn’t a named formation at the overlook to pick out.
