Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail

The Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail is an easy 0.8-mile loop from the far end of the visitor-center parking lot. Allow about 30 minutes. It follows a ridge through open desert scrub, with plant markers and a stone-and-wood overlook as its main stops. A shorter 0.5-mile figure also appears in park information; the full loop mapped here measures about 0.76 mile, rounded to 0.8.

This is a good short surface walk when you want to stretch your legs and see the desert close up. It is a small, low-effort outing rather than a big hike.

The mostly paved path climbs gently along the ridge. Around 0.2 mile in, the stone-and-wood overlook and seating area open up broad views across the desert toward New Mexico and Texas. The plant markers give the short walk a little more to notice than the scenery alone.

Past the overlook, the path narrows and descends toward the Old Guano Road corridor, then returns past the amphitheater toward the visitor-center area. That later stretch is less accessible than the opening section, so don't assume the entire circuit works for a wheelchair or stroller.

Use the main Carlsbad Caverns Visitor Center lot; signed access to the loop begins at its far end. The open route has little shade, and pets are not permitted on park trails. The visitor center has snacks, drinks, and hot and cold meals, but that is a separate stop from the trail itself.
