Pumice Desert

Pumice Desert is a 3,055-acre Research Natural Area: a broad, open volcanic meadow against the lodgepole pine forest along North Entrance Road. It’s a quick roadside stop, not a hike. I’d pull in if you want to see what a volcanic eruption left behind and how slowly plants can return; skip it if you’re mainly looking for another lake view. The meadow is fragile, so stay on established visitor surfaces.

Before Mount Mazama erupted more than 7,700 years ago, a glacier had carved a deep valley here. Pumice and scoria from the eruption and later avalanches buried it; the deposits are believed to be more than 200 feet deep. That’s why this open ground looks so different from the forest around it.

The porous, nutrient-poor ground makes it hard for plants to get established. Just 16 species have been documented across the natural area. An older field study counted 14 species in its sample plots and found plant cover stayed around five percent in 1965, 1977, and 1995. Look for the scattered lodgepole pines and low wildflowers from the visitor area rather than crossing the pumice.

The named parking area sits beside the meadow, so this is an easy pullout rather than a separate walk. North Entrance Road is typically open from June through October, weather permitting. No restroom, potable water, or food service is confirmed at this stop, so plan ahead. For a photo, frame the lone foreground pine with Mount Thielsen behind it; the tree gives the broad, bare plain some scale.
