Discovery Point

Overview

Discovery Point is a classic west‑rim viewpoint reached by the Discovery Point Trail, starting at the west end of Rim Village where the paved path turns to dirt. It hugs the caldera rim for roughly a mile and a half, largely paralleling West Rim Drive, and delivers big‑time lake views for very little effort.

What You'll See

Expect uninterrupted vistas of Crater Lake’s deep blue and a perfect angle on Wizard Island. Between openings, the path weaves through wind‑shaped old‑growth forest with mountain hemlock and whitebark pine, with the caldera’s steep drop‑offs constantly reminding you you’re walking the edge of a collapsed volcano.

Why It’s Special

This is one of the park’s easiest rim walks with outsized payoff. It’s also meaningful: this is where prospector John Wesley Hillman first sighted the lake in 1853, later commemorated by a Discovery Point plaque. The trail itself was built in 1932, and it’s still the simplest way to get long stretches of rim‑top scenery without a big climb.

Trail Feel and Logistics

The tread is mostly level with a few short rises, well‑defined, and close to the road for much of its length. It’s popular near Rim Village, but many visitors peel off quickly—keep walking and it calms down fast. Facilities (food, shop, restrooms) are at Rim Village; there aren’t services at Discovery Point itself.

Conditions and Safety

Snow often covers sections from around October into early July, making footing slick in spots. Wind can bite on exposed stretches, and rim edges can be unstable—give them a healthy buffer, especially when snow is present.

Best Time to Visit

Mid to late summer is the sweet spot once the snow melts. If you’re here in peak season and it feels busy near the start, continue beyond the first quarter‑mile for quieter rim time.

Wildlife

The rim forest and openings can host typical birds and small mammals of the area—nice bonuses, but consider them a pleasant surprise rather than a guarantee.
