Watchman Overlook

Watchman Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on the west rim of Crater Lake, about 7,600 feet above sea level. From the paved viewing area beside the parking lot, Wizard Island sits across the blue lake, with the caldera rim stretching across the horizon. You get this classic view without hiking up Watchman Peak, so it is an easy stop even on a day when you are keeping your walking short.

The parking lot is also the start of the separate Watchman Peak trail, which climbs about 400 feet to the summit observation station at 8,013 feet. The route follows an old road alignment for its first 300 yards, then climbs the slope on switchbacks; the grade is about 15 percent. Whitebark pine and penstemon grow along the trail. The lake view from the pullout does not require that climb; hike only if you want the higher summit panorama as well.

Wizard Island is a cinder cone built by eruptions inside Mount Mazama’s collapsed caldera as rain and snowmelt began filling it with water. Those eruptions continued for hundreds of years, but most of the post-caldera volcanic landscape is hidden beneath the lake. Only about 2 percent of Wizard Island rises above today’s waterline. The last known eruption at Crater Lake was a small underwater lava dome on Wizard Island’s east flank about 4,800 years ago. For a photo, keep the island in a wide frame with some of the surrounding rim; that context shows its scale inside the caldera.

A trail was laid out up Watchman Peak in 1916, and a simple fire tower followed the next year. By 1926, rangers were using the summit for educational programs as well as fire watch. The present observation station was designed by Francis Lange and built from 1931 to 1933. It combined a small museum with an upper viewing platform, making the peak both part of the fire-lookout network and a place to interpret the caldera.
