A quick stop with a big payoff, Pumice Castle Overlook pulls you over on East Rim Drive to stare straight at a vivid orange outcrop carved into turrets and walls—the park’s aptly named Pumice Castle. It’s a short, scenic pause rather than a destination, and that’s part of its charm.
What You’ll See

Why It’s Unique
This “castle” is made of loosely compacted pumice and ash from Mount Mazama’s eruptions. Some pumice beds here are impressively thick—on the order of about 190 feet—and erosion sculpted the castle-like forms you see today.
Amenities and Logistics
This is a simple roadside pullout—often unsigned or minimally signed—intended for short photo stops. Expect limited space to park, no restrooms, and no trail access from the overlook. Stay in established areas; the rim is fragile and the pumice is unstable.

Light is kinder in the morning or late afternoon, when the orange rock glows and textures pop. Midday can be harsh. Traffic on Rim Drive ebbs early and late in the day, which also helps with snagging a spot.
