Overview

Cloudcap Overlook crowns the end of a short spur off East Rim Drive and sits at the top of the highest paved road in Oregon. The payoff is instant: a lofty, wide-open vantage over that impossibly blue water and the jagged caldera walls. It’s a favorite stop for people who want the big view without the big crowds.

What You’ll See

From this perch you get expansive views of the lake, Wizard Island, and the surrounding Cascade volcano country. Just west along the rim are standout formations like Pumice Castle and the Redcloud Cliffs, adding a splash of orange-pink rock and texture to your photos.

Geology in View

Beneath this overlook are glassy dacite lava flows that erupted late in Mount Mazama’s story. The prominent Redcloud flow originated from vents on the caldera wall, a great example of how post-caldera volcanism sculpted the rim you’re standing on. If you like pairing scenery with science, this stop delivers.

Wildlife

Rim overlooks here are good for birds: expect Clark’s nutcrackers and ravens, and keep an eye out for raptors riding thermals. Mule deer and chipmunks are occasionally spotted nearby—bring binoculars if you like to scan the slopes.

This is a simple scenic stop: a small paved lot, interpretive signage, no water or restrooms, and no food or store. The spur road is steep and winding—take it slow. It’s often windy and noticeably cooler up here; even in summer you’ll want a layer.

Sunrise and sunset light the caldera walls beautifully and tend to be the quietest times. Midday is typically the busiest, and parking is limited. Aim for midweek if you can. Most people spend up to 45 minutes here—long enough to savor the view, read the signs, and snap the keepers.

High elevation means grand perspective but also potential midday haze. For crisper views of distant features, go early or late and bring a longer lens. Pair this stop with a quick pullout for Pumice Castle to round out your shots of the east rim.
