Cloudcap Overlook

Cloudcap Overlook is a drive-up viewpoint at the end of a one-mile (1.6 km) spur from East Rim Drive, perched at 7,865 feet. It’s on Oregon’s highest paved road and is the park’s highest paved overlook. Take the turn if you want a wide caldera view without planning a hike; the main view starts at the road’s end.

Cloudcap depends on East Rim Drive, a summer-to-fall route. Snow often keeps the whole road from opening until around mid-July, and it usually closes for winter on November 1 or earlier. Check current road conditions before setting out. The overlook opens with the road. Even in summer, visitors report more wind and cooler air up here than in lower parts of the park, so keep a layer handy.

The lake fills most of the view, with the caldera wall enclosing it and Wizard Island set out on the water. On a clear day, the far rim and Phantom Ship separate into distinct shapes; haze can hide those details. Give yourself a moment to scan the full curve of the lake instead of taking one quick look from the car.

Whitebark pines grow near the overlook, dwarfed and twisted by the strong winds on this exposed rim. They’re easy to miss once the lake has your attention, but their compact, contorted shapes show how tough it is for trees to grow up here.

Cloudcap is also the name of the nearby pumice-covered cliff. Its rhyodacite lava filled an older explosion crater about 20,000 to 30,000 years ago, making this formation older than Llao Rock. That’s a different chapter from the much later eruption that formed Crater Lake’s caldera.

Cloudcap is one of the viewpoints on the 33-mile historic Rim Drive. Its 30 overlooks were designed between 1931 and 1938 to bring out a lake view, a caldera formation, or another environmental feature. Cloudcap gives you the broad lake-and-rim sweep from the east side.

For a photo, keep a strip of the rough rim in the bottom of the frame and look for Wizard Island on the water. That foreground makes the lake read as a crater basin instead of a flat expanse, and you can get the composition from the roadside viewpoint.
