The Museum of Dartmoor Life is a local-history museum in the centre of Okehampton, arranged across three floors of early-19th-century mill and warehouse buildings around a cobbled courtyard. It’s a useful stop before exploring the moor if you want the people and work behind those open landscapes to come into focus. The collection connects Dartmoor’s landscape with the lives built around it.

Six themes take you from prehistoric communities through everyday life, work, folklore and transport. Look for the human side of tin mining, farming, wool, quarrying and trade; these are the industries that shaped both the moor and the nearby towns. Short audio guides recorded inside the museum add context to the displays. Since 2014, it has also served as a North Dartmoor tourist-information point, so it can help you orient yourself as well as fill in the history.

The museum began as a charitable trust in 1978 and opened to visitors in 1981. Its most distinctive exterior feature is the waterwheel. The wheel now on display was rescued from Coombe Park Farm, a place that is now beneath Roadford Reservoir. That detail gives the mill setting a direct link to another piece of Dartmoor history; it’s a small but memorable reason to pause in the courtyard before heading inside.

The lift reaches all three floors, and accessible toilets, seating and quiet spaces are available. The museum describes level access, while warning that some rooms in the listed buildings may not suit wheelchairs or mobility devices wider than 75 cm. The courtyard is cobbled, so the approach may feel uneven. There’s a small on-site car park, with additional town parking nearby. The Victorian Tea Rooms are in adjoining courtyard buildings, an easy pairing for a break. Okehampton station is roughly a 15-minute walk away.
