Trail guide
The Granite Way is an 11-mile, one-way shared route from Okehampton Station to Lydford along Dartmoor’s north-western edge. It is intended for walkers and cyclists and follows much of the former Southern Region railway. The old rail bed keeps most gradients gentle, but the distance makes this a substantial outing: allow around four and a half to five hours on foot at an unhurried pace. Arrange transport at the finish; walking back makes it a 22-mile day. The mapped Lydford line uses the quiet-road branch through Bridestowe after Lake.
After leaving Okehampton, views open toward the castle and the moor. Meldon Viaduct carries the path high above the West Okement valley; its wrought-iron latticework makes a memorable crossing, with views toward Meldon Dam and Dartmoor. Farther west, Lake Viaduct gives a second crossing and another wide view across the granite landscape. These are the route’s defining pauses on a line that otherwise follows the rhythm of wooded valleys and open moorland edges.
At Lake, the route divides. The Lydford option leaves the traffic-free rail path for quiet roads through Bridestowe and the site of its former station, then rejoins the railway for about a mile off-road into Lydford. A traffic-free continuation toward Southerly Halt is another option; follow the Bridestowe branch if Lydford is your endpoint. Most of the corridor has a surfaced path, though a short rougher stretch is mapped. The Bridestowe leg uses public roads, and the route crosses the busy A386. Take particular care at that crossing and expect the surface and traffic conditions to change along the way.
The Okehampton Station car park is under the railway bridge beside the Youth Hostel. At Lydford, the car park is opposite the Castle Inn, so arrange a lift or other return transport before starting. Refreshments are available in Okehampton, Meldon and Lydford. Lydford Castle is nearby if you want to add a separate visit after finishing; it is not part of the mapped route. The moderate effort comes chiefly from the one-way distance and logistics rather than a sustained climb.
