Getting there

Follow the road beside the reservoir to its end, then continue on the forest road to a turning area with limited parking. Carry on from there on foot. At the fork near the end, take the left branch; the open clearing and circle appear on the right shortly afterwards. The final walk's distance and accessibility details weren't verified.

“You're coming up on Fernworthy Reservoir, a water-and-woodland stop near Chagford. The short Potter's Walk follows the shore to the dam, then turns inland past a disused granite quarry and Bronze Age hut circles.”

Fernworthy Circle is a small prehistoric stone ring in a grassy clearing in Fernworthy Forest, west of Fernworthy Reservoir. Its 27 stones stand up to 1.1 metres high around a ring 20 metres across. Go expecting a quiet archaeology stop rather than a grand monument; the appeal is seeing a compact circle set into the forest.

The scheduled complex includes three stone alignments and five cairns, making it one of Dartmoor's most complete prehistoric ritual landscapes. Excavation found charcoal on the circle's original ground surface, though that doesn't tell us exactly what happened here. A double stone row beyond the circle can be hard to spot, so scan the clearing instead of focusing only on the ring. The surrounding spruce frame the stones; clear evening light can bring out their shape.
