Getting there

The highway's pavement break is at MP 21.0, so this stop is on the gravel stretch when approaching from Paxson. Tangle Lakes Campground is a separate stop a mile east at MP 21.5; it lists water pumps, vault toilets and a boat launch. Those are campground facilities, not amenities at the viewpoint.

The gap has long served as a caribou migration route and was a favored Alaska Native hunting area in past centuries. The Nelchina herd still moves through the area, though a sighting is never guaranteed.

Tundra in bloomLow-growing alpine tundra covers the high ground.

Low-growing alpine tundra covers the high ground. Wildflowers bloom during the short June and July season, and pikas, ground squirrels and ptarmigan may be around. For a photo, keep the central gap visible and include a band of tundra in front to show the scale of the opening.
