Tangle Lakes: Choose Your Lakeside Stop“You're coming up on Tangle Lakes, with two different lakeside stops to choose from. For a picnic, use the day-use wayside on the south side of the highway. For a night by the water, the campground is on the north side.”

Trail guide
This is a short out-and-back from Tangle Lakes Campground: about 1 mile round trip, treating the reported half-mile developed trail as the way out, then returning the same way. The published half-mile figure is approximate and does not say whether it is one way or round trip. Expect about 30 minutes for the easy climb and the views.
At Denali Highway milepost 21.5, turn onto the campground road and park immediately on the left. That is the trail access. The campground has toilets and water pumps nearby; those facilities are at the campground, not along the ridge.
The maintained footpath climbs an esker above the Tangle Lakes. It is an easy, short route, with broad views of the lakes and the Amphitheatre Mountains. The open setting makes the ridge itself part of the payoff, even before you take time to pick out the water and surrounding hills.
Footpaths continue beyond the developed trail toward Alaska state lands and Landmark Gap Creek, but those paths are unmaintained and are not included in this mapped route or its distance. A longer ridge outing is described locally, with a different distance; treat it as an extension, not as the maintained campground trail.
The trail and campground sit within the Tangle Lakes Archaeological District, where more than 10,000 years of human use have been documented. Tangle Lakes are a chain of long, narrow lakes linked by the Tangle River, which forms the headwaters of the Delta River.
