Overview

About Aber Falls (Rhaeadr Fawr)

Why stop

  • A tall waterfall with an unusually approachable valley route
  • Native woodland, open picnic spaces, and a strong photo payoff

Heads up

  • Final approach has uneven, steep stretches and slippery rocks
  • Popular days can make the waterfall foot feel crowded
Rhaeadr Fawr is the Afon Goch's final descent from the northern Carneddau foothills. The river drops about 120 feet (37 metres) over a dark rocky face into a shallow pool, then continues toward Abergwyngregyn. The waterfall is the destination, but the approach through the Coedydd Aber native woodland and open valley makes this more than a quick roadside photograph.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to visit

Go after a spell of rain for a fuller cascade, but expect slicker footing and spray near the pool. Early morning or late afternoon is usually the most comfortable for photographs and a quieter feel; pleasant weekends and summer days can be busy at the waterfall itself. Bring a waterproof layer and keep children and dogs close around the uneven rocks and moving water.

Walk and access

Allow roughly 4.5 km return from the Rhaeadr Fawr car parks, with a steady climb of about 100 metres to the waterfall. There are upper and lower car-park starts; the lower start is the more accessible option. The route is generally wide, but the surface is rough in places, with potholes, steep stretches, and uneven ground near the falls. Conventional wheelchairs and pushchairs may manage part of the route but can struggle on the final sections.

The upper car park has a large public toilet and an accessible picnic table. Reach the car parks via the narrow road through Abergwyngregyn, follow designated parking signs, and do not block field entrances or residential access. Wear shoes with reliable grip, especially when the rocks and path are wet.

The waterfall is the obvious draw, but pause on the approach for native woodland, mossy rocks, and the changing shape of the valley. The surrounding area has strong links to Welsh medieval history: nearby Abergwyngregyn was once known as Aber Garth Celyn and was associated with Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last sovereign prince of Wales before the conquest of 1282.

Why stopIt is one of Eryri's best high-reward stops for a short outing.

It is one of Eryri's best high-reward stops for a short outing. You get a proper waterfall, picnic spaces, and a route that feels rural without requiring a mountain day. The bridge at the foot of the falls also carries the Wales Coast Path, adding a useful continuation if you want to walk farther.
