Overview

About Llyn Cau

Why stop

  • A striking glacial setting that feels far wilder than an ordinary lake walk

Heads up

  • Reaching the water takes a steep, rough uphill hike
Llyn Cau is the dark, mountain-ringed lake at the heart of Cwm Cau, the dramatic glacial hollow beneath Cadair Idris. Steep crags nearly encircle the water, so the arrival feels more like entering a natural amphitheatre than reaching an ordinary lakeshore. The lake is the destination, but the enclosing rock walls and the changing light on the water are what make the walk memorable.

Getting there

This is a hike-to lake, not a roadside viewpoint. The usual approach starts at the Dôl Idris car park beside the A487 and follows the Minffordd Path uphill through the reserve. The lake is reached partway along the route, after a sustained climb on rough, rocky ground. Visitor reports commonly put the lake at roughly 3 kilometres from the car park, but the going is steep enough that time varies with weather, fitness and stops. The full Minffordd route to the Cadair Idris summit is 9 kilometres there and back, with 788 metres of ascent and an official duration of about six hours.

The park authority grades the route hard or strenuous and says that good fitness and navigation skills are essential. Expect steep hills, rough country and possible scrambling higher up. There is no level, accessible path to Llyn Cau, and the accessible trails and facilities around the lower Dôl Idris parkland do not continue to the lake.

More about Llyn Cau

Practical adviceGo on a clear, settled day if you want to see the lake’s shape and the surrounding cliffs.

Go on a clear, settled day if you want to see the lake’s shape and the surrounding cliffs. The Minffordd route is popular, so an early start usually gives you a calmer approach and better light before cloud builds around the summit. Mountain conditions can change quickly even when the valley looks benign. Bring waterproof layers, warm clothing, water, food, a map or dependable offline navigation, and boots with good grip. Keep well back from steep edges and do not treat the cold, remote water as a supervised swimming venue.

Dôl Idris has the practical facilities for starting a mountain day, including parking, toilets and picnic provision, but there are no services at the lake itself. A bus can reach the Minffordd area, although most visitors drive to the designated car park. Leave no trace, keep dogs under control where permitted, and check the mountain forecast before setting out.

Why stopCwm Cau was carved by ice over successive glacial periods.

Cwm Cau was carved by ice over successive glacial periods. The surrounding reserve is also a good place to watch the sky and screes: peregrine falcons may hunt above the crags, while wheatears, ring ouzels and other upland birds are possible sightings in the right season. Welsh folklore adds its own atmosphere, with stories of the giant Idris and a lake said to be bottomless. Treat that as legend, not lake science.
