Overview
About Cymer Abbey
Cymer is a small, atmospheric Cistercian ruin beside the River Mawddach. Founded in 1198 under the patronage of the princes of Gwynedd, it was never a wealthy house, and conflict in the 13th century helped leave its church unfinished. The surviving arches, great window openings, unusual tower, and weathered stonework are the draw; the surrounding valley and wooded hills give the compact site more sense of place than its size suggests.
Find it just off the A470 near Llanelltyd, north of Dolgellau. There is a small car park near the entrance, and the approach passes through the nearby holiday and caravan area. Cadw classifies the terrain as Level 1 – Accessible, but this is an exposed ruin: ground and stone can be slippery or muddy, and take care around uneven masonry. There are no toilets. Dogs may access the ground-floor levels on short leads. Wear grippy footwear, allow roughly 10–20 minutes for the ruins, and look through the arches toward the hills before you leave.
Why stop
- Striking arches and window openings with a mountain-valley backdrop
- Quiet, atmospheric ruins that work well for a short photo stop
Heads up
