Trail guide
This is a circular 0.6 km round trip around Llyn Dôl Idris, set in parkland at the southern foothills of Cader Idris. Most walkers take 15 to 30 minutes, and the loop returns to the same car-park-side access where it begins. Expect a gentle, low-relief stroll of a few metres of rise and fall rather than a mountain walk.
The path is graded as accessible: a well-surfaced route about 1.7 metres wide, with no steps or stiles anywhere on the loop and resting places roughly every 150 metres. That combination suits wheelchairs, pushchairs and anyone wanting a flat, unhurried walk. Picnic tables sit beside the water.
The route stays close to the lake and crosses a footbridge, where a fish ladder helps salmon continue upstream into the feeder streams. Dippers and grey wagtails breed on the lakeshore, so it is worth pausing at the resting places to watch the water margins and the bridge pools.
Start from Dôl Idris car park, just off the A487 on the B4405 between Dolgellau and Machynlleth. The car park is managed by the national park authority and has accessible parking spaces and an accessible toilet. The signed footpath access to the lake is a short distance from the parking area.
Dogs are welcome on this public footpath and should be kept under close control, with a short lead near livestock or wildlife, which matters here given the breeding birds along the shore. On open access land a lead no longer than 2 metres is required from 1 March to 31 July.
A separate Parkland Circuit of about 0.9 km leaves from the same parkland and adds a gradual climb of around 16% with an unsurfaced return track. It is a good next step if the lake loop feels too brief, though it is a less level and rougher alternative to the surfaced lakeside path.
