Heads up

  • The town is compact and quieter on the attractions front
Y Bala is a small historic market town on the north-east shore of Llyn Tegid, backed by the Aran, Arenig and Berwyn mountains. It is a useful, lived-in base for this quieter corner of Eryri, with a long high street, local shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants rather than a single staged attraction. The Welsh language is part of the place’s character, not just a sign on the map.

Before you go

Best time to go

The lake is most popular in spring and summer, especially when the weather is settled. For a calmer stop, aim for a weekday outside the main summer rush. Late-evening summer light can work beautifully along the foreshore; in autumn, a midday visit gives a better chance of even light on the town-and-lake circuit. Bring a waterproof layer even for a short walk, and take care near the water in windy weather. In warm, still conditions, watch for blue-green algae and follow any current signs before entering the lake.

The Llyn Tegid foreshore car park is the most useful starting point for the town-and-lake circuit. Public toilets, including accessible facilities, are available there. Park in designated spaces, then use the foreshore path and the high street rather than trying to drive into the narrowest lanes. Y Bala is easy to combine with the Bala Lake Railway or a longer lake walk, but the town itself is compact: it is a rewarding cultural and practical stop, not a full day of major attractions on its own.

“You're approaching Y Bala, a Welsh-speaking market town with the lake, river and high street close together. I'd start at the foreshore and take the three-point-two-kilometre Town, River and Lake Path.”

More about Y Bala

Lake, river and town in one walkThe best way to join the pieces together is the 3.

The best way to join the pieces together is the 3.2 km Bala Town, River and Lake Path, a circular route that starts at the Llyn Tegid foreshore, follows the Dyfrdwy for a short stretch, and returns through town. The route is graded Access for All: it is largely flat and even, with no steps or steep sections, making it suitable for conventional wheelchairs, pushchairs and purpose-built off-road mobility scooters.

Llyn Tegid is Wales’ largest natural lake, about 3.5 miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide. The foreshore is the town’s scenic counterpoint: paddleboards, canoes, windsurfers and anglers use the water, while the shore gives non-boaters an easy place to watch the weather move over the hills. The lake is home to the Gwyniad, a rare whitefish native to Llyn Tegid. Water sports and fishing are regulated, so check current permit and safety information before taking equipment onto the lake.

For a quick bit of history, walk up to Tomen y Bala, the medieval motte at the north end of town. It is a small stop, but the raised ground gives a worthwhile look across the rooftops and the lake. Bala’s story also runs through Welsh religious and cultural history, including the town’s connection with the 1800 Bible-buying journey of Mari Jones.
