Eryri National Park, WA
Short hill loop above Y Bala with quarry cave and Berwyn views
Overview
The hilltop stretch is where the walk earns its keep: Y Bala laid out below, the old quarry, and the Berwyn mountains and neighbouring ranges filling the skyline. The quarry itself is the other highlight, with a cave running roughly 400 m into the rock held up by thick stone pillars. Look, photograph, and stay out. Derelict industrial structures and old buildings on this route are not places to poke around inside.

Y Bala Town and Lake Walk“You're approaching Y Bala, a Welsh-speaking market town with the lake, river and high street close together. I'd start at the foreshore and take the three-point-two-kilometre Town, River and Lake Path.”

Trail guide
A 4.5 km circular walk that starts and finishes at the Llyn Tegid foreshore car park, a complete loop from and back to the same place. Reckon on 1.5 to 2 hours depending on how long you linger at the viewpoints and how soft the ground is underfoot. It is graded leisurely and reasonably easy, with one honest climb near the beginning and a long, gradual descent to finish.
Leave the lakeside car park and follow the main road towards town, then turn off towards the golf course. The route climbs through houses and onto a narrow country road past Fronderw and Maes Awelon before topping out on the hill. From there it drops past the golf club towards Hendre-ddu, over two stiles flanked by tall hazel hedgerows, past a derelict building, then across into the next field and down to the disused Craig y Fron stone quarry. A stile and a fence line lead you back towards town past Pen-rhiw cottage, with a footpath and main road section closing the loop.
Expect unsurfaced, undulating rural paths, farm tracks and grazing land. Walking boots and waterproof clothing are the sensible default. Practical things to plan for:
Use the designated foreshore car park only and do not block field gates or residential driveways. The narrow country road section passes people's homes, so keep it quiet and courteous. Dogs are welcome on the public footpaths and open access land here. Keep them under close control on rights of way, on a short lead around livestock and wildlife, and on a lead no longer than 2 m on open access land between 1 March and 31 July.
As a family friendly half morning out it works well, especially if you want a real view without committing to a mountain. It is a quiet route rather than a busy one, which is part of the appeal. If you only have one walk in you and you want high drama, look elsewhere in the area first, but if you are based near the lake and want a satisfying loop with a quarry and a wide horizon, this is a good use of two hours.
