Overview

Hidden Falls is a powerful 20–25 m waterfall tucked into Fiordland rainforest along the Hollyford Track. It’s close enough to generate its own wind and mist, and the approach through beech forest and the broad Hollyford Valley feels properly wild without being a suffer-fest.

The Walk

This outing follows the first section of the Hollyford Track along the valley floor with gentle undulations and bridged creek crossings (including Humboldt Creek). Expect a largely flat, well‑formed tramping track. Allow roughly 3.5–5 hours return for about 10–12 km.

A suspension bridge appears shortly before the falls. You’ll hear the roar from the bridge but won’t see the waterfall from it—hence the name. The viewing path for the falls is reached before that bridge.

What You’ll See

Classic Fiordland: mossy beech forest, lush fern understory, and the turquoise Hollyford River.
The falls themselves: booming flow, swirling spray, and that cool, rain‑forest chill.
Big valley views and surrounding peaks on the approach give the walk a grand backdrop.

Wildlife

Birdlife typical of this valley includes tūī, bellbird, and fantail, with the chance of encountering whio (blue duck) on rivers or kea overhead. Keep eyes and ears open in the quieter forest sections.

Practicalities and Hazards

Fiordland is famously wet—bring waterproofs and expect mud.
Sandflies love river margins and waterfall basins; strong repellent is your best friend.
Services are minimal. Hidden Falls Hut sits nearby and provides basic shelter and non‑flush toilets, but there’s no food or store. Check Department of Conservation (DOC) alerts before you go.

Tips for the Trail

Don’t cross the suspension bridge if your goal is the waterfall viewpoint—the access is before it.
The falls’ mist can drench you and your camera; pack rain protection.
If you plan to overnight, book Hidden Falls Hut in advance via DOC.

Best Time to Visit

Year‑round, weather permitting. Overcast or showery days are classic Fiordland and make the forest glow while keeping contrast down for photos. After rain, the waterfall is especially punchy, though the track gets muddier—plan footwear and time accordingly.
