Why hike it

If you want Fiordland’s mossy rainforest, big river energy, and a proper waterfall payoff without alpine exposure, this lower section of the Hollyford Track delivers. It’s a mostly flat valley walk with swing bridges, lush green tunnels of ferns and beech, and the roar of Hidden Falls at the turnaround.

The experience

From the Lower Hollyford Road trailhead, you step straight onto a swing bridge over Humboldt Creek, then settle into easy valley travel beside the Hollyford River. Expect a well-marked backcountry track: dirt, roots, occasional boardwalks over boggy bits, and plenty of mud after rain. Birdsong (tui, fantails, robins) is a constant soundtrack in the dense, moss-draped forest. Hidden Falls is the highlight—powerful and misty in a rocky gorge—with a bridge offering safe, close viewing.

This is commonly done as an out-and-back day walk to either the falls or the nearby Hidden Falls Hut as your lunch stop. Plan on about 11.4 miles total out-and-back, with minimal elevation change (roughly 100 m/330 ft total gain) and a steady, never-steep grade.

Difficulty and conditions

On paper it looks easy; on the ground it’s true Fiordland. The Department of Conservation classifies this as an “Advanced: Tramping track,” which reflects the rough, muddy surface rather than technical terrain. After rain (which is frequent here), expect slick roots, puddles, and slow-going sections. The Hollyford River can rise quickly—check DOC alerts before you go.

Logistics

Park at the Lower Hollyford Road trailhead (the start of the Hollyford Track). There are facilities at the trailhead. There are no toilets at the waterfall itself; the Hidden Falls Hut nearby is a common rest stop. No permits are required for day walkers, and dogs aren’t allowed.

Best time to hike

Year-round when conditions are safe, with summer (Dec–Mar) offering longer daylight and the best odds of friendlier weather. Fiordland is wet in every season—bring rain gear regardless. For photos, morning or late afternoon soft light works well in the forest and at the falls; expect mist and spray near the viewpoint.

Tips

  • Rain jacket and waterproof boots aren’t optional here—they’re smart.
  • Insect repellent is essential; sandflies are feisty near water.
  • Even as a day walk, treat it like backcountry: carry warm layers, food, and a map; tell someone your plans.

Bottom line: a rewarding, less-crowded taste of Fiordland’s rainforest and river scenery with a legit waterfall finish—worth the day.

Pros

  • Immediate swing-bridge start over Humboldt Creek sets the tone
  • Bridge viewpoint lets you safely get close to the falls
  • Less crowded than Milford or Routeburn hotspots

Cons

  • Backcountry-standard surface despite a straightforward route
  • Very muddy and slippery after frequent Fiordland rain

Parking

Park at the Lower Hollyford Road trailhead (start of the Hollyford Track).

Caution

Frequent heavy rain makes the track muddy and slick; rivers can rise quickly—check DOC alerts. Swing bridges are part of the route. Sandflies are persistent near water. No dogs.
