An easy, 600‑meter loop (about 0.4 miles total) that delivers outsized scenery for minimal effort. The circuit rides the edge of granite sea cliffs near the 1971 Cape Tourville Lighthouse, with constant Tasman Sea views and a front‑row seat to the Freycinet coastline.
Route
From the car park, a short compacted‑dirt path rises gently through low coastal scrub before meeting a wide timber boardwalk signed to walk anti‑clockwise. The path is even underfoot and stays close to the clifftops, with protective railings where you’ll want them.
What you’ll see
Look south to Carp Bay and Sleepy Bay, with the signature curve of Wineglass Bay backed by the Hazards’ high points, Mount Graham and Mount Freycinet. Offshore, spot Lemon Rock and the cluster of islets called The Nuggets—home to thriving seabird colonies thanks to the lack of predators. Keep an eye on the water: this stretch is a migration route for humpback and southern right whales, and dolphins and seals show up often. The lighthouse itself sits high on the granite headland and frames classic photos in good light.
Accessibility and amenities
This is one of the park’s most accessible walks: the boardwalk is wheelchair‑friendly and pram‑friendly, though a gentle gradient means some users may appreciate assistance. A TrailRider all‑terrain wheelchair can be arranged through the park. Dogs and bikes are not permitted. There are no toilets on the circuit; use facilities at the main car park areas elsewhere in the park. Free long‑range binoculars are sometimes available on site for whale watching.
Best time to hike
Clear, calm days make the ocean views pop; sunrise is especially lovely here and often quieter. In winter and during migration periods, build in time to scan for whales. It’s exposed and can be windy—bring a layer even on fair days.
Getting there and fees
The trailhead sits at the end of Cape Tourville Road inside Freycinet National Park, roughly 5.5 km to the car park and about 7 km from the visitor center. A valid Tasmania National Parks pass is required (day and multi‑week options exist).
