Sleepy Bay

Sleepy Bay is a small rocky cove on the road toward Cape Tourville in Freycinet National Park. Orange lichen covers the granite around clear turquoise water, with a pebbly shore below the first lookout. It’s a colourful break from the drive if you want a short walk and a close look at Tasmania’s east coast. Allow about 10 minutes return for the lookout, or around 30 minutes if you continue to Gravelly Beach.

The track starts at Sleepy Bay car park. The first lookout gives you the broad view; continue farther down if you want to reach the rocky shore. It’s a short Grade 3 walk, but it’s rough underfoot and steep in parts, with steps. The lower shore takes longer, and the climb back up is the part to expect. The track doesn’t cater for visitors with access needs.

The draw is the contrast between the orange-lichen rocks and blue-green water. The shore is small and pebbly, not a wide sandy beach. Gravelly Beach is a separate destination farther along the walk, so choose it if you want the longer outing rather than treating it as part of the first lookout stop.

The first lookout shows the shape of the cove; the lower shore puts orange rock and water together in the foreground. If that’s the view you want, walk down and leave time for the steep return. Parking is at the track entrance, and this is a walk stop rather than a place to plan a meal.
