Hidden Falls

Hidden Falls is a forceful cascade on Cascade Creek along Jenny Lake’s west shore, reached by a forest path to a rocky viewing area. I’d keep it on the list if you want a waterfall with real sound and spray without committing to a long hike: the boat-shortened walk is about a mile round trip. The falls appear close to the end, so the payoff arrives suddenly.

From the west boat dock, it’s about half a mile to the falls. The boat shuttle crosses Jenny Lake and makes the falls outing a 1-mile round trip with 300 feet of climbing, an easy route. The longer approach follows the south shore and makes it a 4.9-mile round trip with 620 feet of climbing, rated moderate. The boat is a separate paid ride, with tickets at the dock. Beyond the falls, the trail climbs more steeply another half-mile to Inspiration Point.

You won’t see the cascade until you’re within about 100 yards of the viewpoint. Then the trees open onto white water breaking over rock ledges, with spray rising from the creek below. The sound can drown out conversation, and the cool mist makes this feel like more than a quick photo stop.

Cascade Creek is fed by snowmelt that enters the channel, seeps into the ground and rises back into the creek farther along. At peak runoff, water ricochets off the outcrops; the flow can still be forceful later in summer. The waterfall’s name comes from the short, concealed approach: it stays out of sight until visitors are close.

South Jenny Lake parking fills in mid-summer, so arrive before 9 a.m. for a better chance at a space. This is a popular stop, and visitors can bunch up at the falls viewpoint; allow extra time if you plan to take the shuttle back across the lake. The route has dirt, roots and rock steps, and pets aren’t allowed on the trail. At the viewpoint, keep a rocky ledge in frame with the falling water to show the cascade’s tiers and scale.
