This isn’t a formal trail—it’s Grey River Road, a quiet dirt road rising from the tiny township of Kennett River between Lorne and Apollo Bay. The roadside eucalyptus forest holds a notably dense population of wild koalas, so sightings are common, though never guaranteed. It’s an easy, choose‑your‑own‑distance wander or slow drive, and far less zoo, more real‑world nature.
How to Spot Koalas
Don’t stop at the first trees by the cafe—that’s where the buses cluster. Keep walking or driving 1–3 km up the road. Scan where the trunk meets big branches; koalas often wedge themselves into those crooks. Many sit just above eye level beside the road, so take your time. If you drive, go very slow, pull well off the road when you stop, and expect bumps and dust.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning or late afternoon is your sweet spot: koalas are likelier to shuffle and feed, birds are active, and you’ll miss the mid‑morning tour crowds. Midday tends to be sleepy (for the koalas and the vibe) with more people near the start.
