Carisbrook Falls

Overview

Carisbrook Falls is a quick leg‑stretch with a big payoff: a tall, graceful cascade dropping into a forested valley inside Great Otway National Park. The signed pull-in sits right off the Great Ocean Road near Wongarra, making it an easy add to any coast drive.

The Walk

It’s about 500 m one way on a gravel path with steady uphill and some uneven bits. Allow 10–30 minutes return depending on pace. The track ends at a single lookout across the ravine; there’s a small bench to linger and listen to the water.

What You’ll See

From the lookout you get a grandstand, side-on view of a roughly 50 m waterfall framed by lush, cool‑temperate forest—ferns, mossy rock, and damp gullies. The flow fluctuates with weather, but when it’s been raining the falls feel much more alive.

Best Time to Visit

Waterfall lovers should aim for winter months or any time after decent rain. For a quieter stop, go early morning or late afternoon; late morning to mid‑afternoon is when it’s most likely to feel busy. Soft side light also helps with photos, and a modest zoom lens is handy given the distance to the falls.

You’re in prime Otways habitat—keep an eye out for birdlife at dawn and dusk. The wider park is home to protected species like echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots; observe from a distance and never feed wildlife.

Practicalities & Restrictions

There are no toilets, water, or bins—plan a bathroom stop in nearby towns and pack out all rubbish. Stay on the formed track; there’s no official route to the base. Parks rules apply here: no dogs, no drones without a permit, and no camping, fires, fishing, horses, or bicycles. Check for any changed conditions before you go.
