Carisbrook Falls

Carisbrook Falls is a waterfall lookout at Wongarra, on the Great Ocean Road between Kennett River and Skenes Creek. A short uphill walk leads from the roadside car park to a platform across a steep, forested gorge. The falls are several hundred metres away, so this is a leg-stretch with a distant view, not a walk to the water. Go if you enjoy a quick stop and a wooded ravine; skip it if you want a close-up, towering plunge.

The cascades can look slight after a dry spell. They are usually more rewarding in wetter winter and spring weather or after rain, when more water makes it across the rock face. The gorge remains a pleasant setting when flow is low, but the waterfall itself may not be much to look at.

Carisbrook Creek crosses tilted marine arkose. Its roughly 500-metre run includes rapids, cascades and smaller falls with nearly 200 metres of total descent. That is the fall across the whole stepped reach, not one sheer waterfall; from the lookout, the creek reads as a chain of whitewater through the trees.

The return walk is about 600 metres, with a short uphill climb to the lookout; allow around 15 minutes at an easy pace. The falls sit far enough across the gorge that binoculars or a zoom lens help. For a photo, include the forested slope around the cascade so the falls make sense in their setting. The roadside car park is small and unsealed, so treat this as a simple stop rather than a full-service picnic area.
