Trail guide
The Allenvale Mill to Phantom Falls walk is a 3.5 km out-and-back in Great Otway National Park, following the St George River to a waterfall lookout and pool. Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours. It is rated easy to moderate, but the loose-gravel climb and steep stepped finish make it more than a flat stroll. The falls tend to show more water after rain and can run lightly in drier periods.
Start at Allenvale Mill Car Park and cross Allenvale Road at the signed track entrance. A narrow bush path follows the river, crosses a small bridge and passes through apple orchard and farmland before entering native park vegetation. The route climbs above the riverbed on a vehicle track; some sections are steep and loose underfoot. Views open over the St George River valley before the trail drops by steps toward the falls.
Shortly before the falls, a management track branches toward The Canyon and Sheoak Picnic Ground. Keep to the signed Phantom Falls route for this shorter return walk. A small lookout and seat face an escarpment edged with tree ferns, and steep steps descend to the pool at the base. From beside the pool, include the full rock face and both cascades to show the height of the drop.
The trail starts at Allenvale Mill Car Park on Allenvale Road, beside Allenvale Campground. The adjacent campground lists non-flush toilets, picnic tables and shelters; no drinking water is confirmed. Dogs are not allowed in the national park except assistance dogs.
