Trail guide
Lower Kalimna Falls Walk is a 6.5 km return walk from Sheoak Picnic Area to the Lower Falls and back. Allow about 2½ hours. The walk follows creekside forest tracks to a modest cascade that spills over a broad, undercut rock ledge into a pool. This is the lower-only outing; the combined Upper and Lower Kalimna Falls walk is a separate, longer 8 km return route. A local route description also gives a 6.25 km circuit using the Nature Trail for a different return, so the distance varies slightly with the route chosen. The route shown here follows the lower-falls return itinerary.
Start on the signed Lower Kalimna Falls Track opposite the Sheoak Picnic Area car park. The path is well defined and follows Sheoak Creek through tall eucalypts, tree ferns and wattles. Bridges carry the track over gullies along the creek. At the signposted fork, take the right-hand track down to the base of the Lower Falls. The walk is described as easy when dry, but it is not a paved stroll: expect natural track surfaces, some undulation and a muddy tread after rain. Wear shoes with grip and take your time on wet sections.
The Lower Falls are not especially tall, but the wide, undercut rock shelf makes this a memorable stop. From the pool, the recess behind the cascade frames the water and the ferny gully beyond; mossy rocks and fallen logs fill the foreground. The water volume changes with rainfall, so the cascade may be modest in a dry spell and stronger after rain. The poolside rocks and ledge can be slippery. For a photo, use a stable spot on the established approach and frame the falls through the rock opening rather than stepping onto wet rock.
This forest once carried timber toward Lorne Pier. Timber tramways operated from the 1890s until logging ended in the 1920s, and the walk passes a former tramway cutting and a historical marker. The very large trees that escaped logging make the forest feel different from a uniform regrowth plantation. Look up through the eucalypts and tree ferns, and check the logs and trunks for seasonal fungi and flowers. Local naturalists list white-throated treecreepers, grey shrikethrushes and eastern yellow robins in this area; you may hear birds before you spot them.
Sheoak Picnic Area on Garvey Track is the correct starting access. It has parking, toilets, picnic tables, gas barbecues and an information board. Parking capacity and fees are not published. No food service or drinking-water source is listed at the walk, so bring water and plan meals in Lorne. Dogs are not permitted on these Great Otway National Park trails.
