Andrews Bald

Overview

Andrews Bald is the Smokies’ highest grassy bald, a treeless meadow perched near Clingmans Dome (Kuwohi). It’s a sweet payoff: an open field with sweeping views toward Fontana Lake and the southern ranges, reached by a short, rugged hike. On clear days, it’s a crowd-pleaser; on foggy ones, it’s moody and peaceful.

The Hike

Start at the Forney Ridge Trail by the Clingmans Dome parking area and follow it 1.8 miles to the bald (3.6 miles round trip). The route trends downhill first—so you’ll climb back on the return. Expect rocks, roots, lots of stone steps, and some boardwalks from the Trails Forever rebuild. Most hikers take 2–3 hours with a snack break at the meadow.

What You’ll See

You’ll walk through cool spruce–fir forest before the trail opens onto the grassy bald. The meadow offers wide-open vistas and is dotted with rhododendron and seasonal azaleas. Late summer often brings blueberry and blackberry patches nearby (look, don’t pick). Many hikers bring a picnic and linger if the wind isn’t howling.

History of the Balds

Grassy balds in the Smokies don’t sit above timberline—people helped make and maintain them. Historical accounts point to early clearing and long-running grazing that kept trees at bay. Without that constant browsing, shrubs and young trees try to creep back in, which is why many balds are smaller today than a century ago. Local tradition even ties Andrews Bald’s name to an early settler.

Conditions and Wildlife

High elevation means cooler temps, sudden wind, fast-moving storms, and frequent fog—even when lower elevations are sunny. Footing can be slick after rain. Black bears roam these forests; keep snacks packed away, give wildlife space, and never feed animals.

Best Time to Visit

• Spring: Fresh green grass and flame azaleas make it especially photogenic.
• Summer: Cooler than the valleys; start early for parking and clearer morning views.
• Fall: Crisp air and long views if skies are clear.

Any season can cloud in quickly—aim for a clear window if views are your goal.

Logistics

Trailhead, parking, and seasonal vault toilets are at the Clingmans Dome area. There’s no water or services on the trail or at the bald, so pack what you need and carry out all trash. Pets aren’t allowed on this trail.
