Parking

There is no parking at either endpoint. The Forney Creek junction is about 3.7 miles up Forney Creek Trail from its junction with Lakeshore Trail. The route ends at Welch Ridge Trail, so plan an onward backcountry exit or add the return and approach miles.

Safety

Repeated stream crossings occur in the first two miles; rocks can be slick and runoff can cover the tread. High water or washed-out footbridges can make crossings unsafe. This remote segment has no quick road exit; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Hiking Jonas Creek Trail

Plan the full routeJonas Creek Trail is a 4.

Jonas Creek Trail is a 4.1-mile point-to-point climb from the Forney Creek Trail junction to Welch Ridge Trail. It follows Jonas Creek, Little Jonas Creek and Yanu Branch through steep, forested valleys, with a cascade along the way. This is a remote backcountry segment: the start is about 3.7 miles up Forney Creek Trail from its junction with Lakeshore Trail, and the far end continues into the backcountry. Allow about four hours for the Jonas Creek leg, then add the approach and exit miles. If you want to turn around, you will retrace the climb and still have the walk back to road access.

Water comes firstThe lower part of the trail crosses streams repeatedly.

The lower part of the trail crosses streams repeatedly. A past hike counted six crossings in the first two miles; expect slick rocks and water that can spill across the tread. A cascade is one of the route's best pauses. The National Park Service warns that backcountry streams can swell and footbridges can wash out, so check current conditions before you go and don't attempt a crossing when the water is unsafe.

Climb to Welch RidgeAfter the creek crossings, the trail zigzags beside Yanu Branch, then climbs the flank of Yanu…

After the creek crossings, the trail zigzags beside Yanu Branch, then climbs the flank of Yanu Ridge in switchbacks and short stair-step pitches. One past hike estimated about 2,100 feet of elevation gain. The finish is an unassuming junction with Welch Ridge Trail on a steep hillside, not a summit viewpoint. Expect a steady uphill push through shaded creek forest.

Access and rulesThere is no road parking at either end.

There is no road parking at either end. Reach the Forney Creek junction on foot from Lakeshore Trail, then continue from Welch Ridge along your planned backcountry route. If you stay overnight, the park requires a backcountry permit; reserve shelters and the campsites that require advance booking. Jonas Creek is designated for hikers and horses. Dogs are prohibited on this trail.
