Overview
A quiet, evocative stop on the Cades Cove Loop, this white-frame church delivers a quick step back in time. You can walk inside the 1915 building, take in the bell tower and the unusual bay window behind the pulpit, then wander the small cemetery. It’s one of three historic churches on the loop and, for many, the most architecturally interesting of the trio.
A Short History
The congregation formed in 1841 after a split from the original Baptist church over missions, temperance societies, and Sunday schools. After fitful years during the Civil War, the group revived, built its first meeting house on nearby Hyatt Hill in 1894, and then outgrew it—leading to the larger 1915 church you see today on the loop road.
What You’ll See
Inside, expect simple, unfinished wooden pews and the added bay behind the pulpit that increased floor space. Outside, a small cemetery sits on the grounds, and across the road is Rich Mountain Road. In March–April, scan the right side between the church and Tater Branch: daffodils bloom in a pattern that spells “Co. 5427,” honoring a Civilian Conservation Corps company that helped build trails, roads, and bridges in the park.
How Long to Spend
This is a quick but meaningful stop—about 15 minutes is enough to step inside, read the room, and stroll the headstones.
Wildlife & Atmosphere
Cades Cove is famous for wildlife; bear and turkey sightings are common and can cause traffic backups. The church itself is typically peaceful, especially earlier in the day.
Practicalities
This is a preserved historic site, not a staffed facility—don’t expect electricity, climate control, or restrooms. Plan bathroom stops elsewhere in Cades Cove (the mill area further along the loop is the usual option). If you plan to park more than 15 minutes anywhere in the park, you’ll need a parking tag.

The church is occasionally used for ceremonies. If something is in progress, give it space and check back. All weddings in the park require a Special Use Permit—policies and time windows can change, so confirm details before planning anything.
