Rich Mountain Road Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on the one-way gravel road above Cades Cove, with a view down toward the Primitive Baptist Church. It’s a distinct stop from the overlook on the loop road. Keep it in the plan if you want a different angle on the cove; the slow drive is part of the commitment.

The church in the valleyThe Primitive Baptist congregation was organized in 1827 as the first church in Cades Cove.

The Primitive Baptist congregation was organized in 1827 as the first church in Cades Cove. Members met in homes until a log meetinghouse was built in 1832. After a split over missionary work, the congregation adopted the Primitive Baptist name in 1841. The white frame church visible today dates to 1887.

The church is the detail to pick out against the valley and wooded ridges. Frame it with the wider view to show how the historic building sits in the cove.
