Huskey Branch Falls

Overview

Huskey Branch Falls is a gentle reward at the end of an easy riverside stroll in the Elkmont area. Think wide, mostly gravel tread, the steady hush of the Little River, and a photogenic 20‑foot cascade that slips beneath a wooden footbridge.

The Hike

You’ll start from the Little River Trailhead and follow an old roadbed that climbs gradually along the river. It’s a 4.3–4.4 mile round trip with roughly 350–380 feet of gain, usually taking 1.5–2.5 hours depending on photo stops. The path is broad and well‑graded, making it a relaxed outing for most hikers.

The Waterfall

About 2.2 miles in, you’ll hear the creek before you see it. The falls aren’t signed, but they’re unmistakable where the trail narrows and a wooden bridge crosses the cascade. Expect a tiered, 20‑foot drop that shines after recent rain; in drier periods it’s more subdued.

History and Nature on the Way

Elkmont’s past lines this route—mossy stone gates and remnants from the area’s early 20th‑century vacation era peek through the trees. In spring, look for trillium, blue phlox, and violets along the corridor, and enjoy constant river scenery the whole way.

Wildlife and Safety

This is classic bear country, and hikers have reported sightings along the Little River corridor. Give wildlife plenty of space and follow park guidance. Snakes—occasionally even a timber rattlesnake—can be encountered on warm days, so watch your footing. Rocks and the bridge can be slick when wet.

Logistics

Park at the Little River Trailhead beyond Elkmont Campground. Restrooms are typically available in the Elkmont area when facilities are open, but availability can be seasonal—plan accordingly. There’s no potable water on the trail.

Best Time to Visit

Go after a recent rain if you want the falls at their best. Spring brings wildflowers; fall colors glow along the river. Mornings or weekdays are your safest bet for lighter traffic, soft light, and easier parking.
