Overview

A 1928-era jewel in the Elkmont Historic District, Spence Cabin is a restored day‑use venue right on the Little River. Think intimate weddings, family gatherings, or meetings with a woodsy soundtrack and a historic vibe. It’s peaceful, photogenic, and feels tucked away from the bustle.

Setting & Vibe

The cabin sits in a narrow, relatively flat valley where Jakes Creek meets the Little River, surrounded by forested ridges. Outside, you get a 192 sq ft screened porch facing the river plus stone patios (including a smaller riverside patio) that make the most of the setting.

What’s Inside

You’ll have a large 432 sq ft main room with a gas fireplace and four smaller rooms (118–165 sq ft). Lighting is intentionally subdued to keep the historic character. The “warming” kitchen has a refrigerator and microwave (no cook stove), and there are plenty of outlets for slow cookers and similar devices. Furnishings include 40 folding chairs, four 6‑ft round tables, eight rectangular tables, and six rocking chairs.

Practicalities & Rules

There’s no heat or A/C; ceiling fans help in the main room and screened porch, and the main room has a gas fireplace. Two bathrooms are on site. Expect no cell coverage in Elkmont—plan your coordination ahead of time. Prohibited items include open flames (candles/oil lamps), portable heaters, glitter, rice, seeds, and confetti; pets and smoking are not allowed inside federal buildings. Alcohol is allowed consistent with laws and park rules. Guests must clean the cabin and grounds before departure; supplies are provided.

Reservations, Hours, and Fees

Day‑use only, 10 AM–8 PM, April 1–October 31. Reserve up to a year in advance. Check in with park staff at 10 AM and check out by 8 PM. Weddings and receptions require a separate Special Use Permit. The listed fee is $200/day plus a $400 refundable security deposit.

Parking & Access

Your reservation includes nine designated parking spaces (about 100 yards from the cabin) that don’t require a park parking tag; vehicles parked elsewhere must have a tag. There are also a couple of spaces right by the cabin. Carpooling or a small shuttle is recommended for groups.

Nearby Things to Do

You’re steps from classic Elkmont hikes: Little River Trail, Jakes Creek, the short self‑guided Elkmont Nature Trail, and a quick drive to Laurel Falls. Fishing is popular above and below Elkmont. Early June can bring the synchronous firefly viewing event in this area—magical, but plan far ahead if that’s on your radar.

Wildlife & Safety

This is active black bear country. Store food properly, keep a clean site, stay alert, and report any unusual bear interactions as directed by the park.

Getting There

From Gatlinburg, go south on Newfound Gap Road (US‑441) for 1.7 miles, turn right on Little River Road for 5 miles, then left on Elkmont Campground Road for 1.4 miles. Turn left just before the campground office (signed for Elkmont Nature, Little River, and Jakes Creek trails) and follow signs to the Spence Cabin parking loop.

Best Time to Visit

• Season: April–October only; spring and fall are most comfortable without A/C or heat.
• Weekdays: Quieter and easier logistics for events and photos.
• Light: Late afternoon brings soft, even light on the river; bring flashlights if you’ll be packing up near dusk since paths aren’t lit.
