Tucked above Jakes Creek near Elkmont, Avent Cabin is one of the park’s most atmospheric historic sites: a hand-hewn 1845 log cabin later used as painter Mayna Treanor Avent’s summer studio. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and still feels like a working retreat—quiet, shaded, and full of character.
What You’ll See
Step inside to find touches added for a 1920s studio: a big 8‑foot window for natural light, oak floors with baseboards, a mortared stone-and-brick fireplace, a small attached kitchen with sink and iron stove, and a half loft. There’s often a visitor register and a binder with photos and history. The setting—on a slope above lively Jakes Creek—makes the porch a perfect spot to linger.
Getting There
Park at the Jakes Creek Trailhead in the Elkmont area. Follow Jakes Creek Trail, passing Cucumber Gap at 0.3 miles and Meigs Mountain at ~0.4 miles. About 0.25 miles past Meigs Mountain, watch for a subtle dip and wooden steps dropping right—this is the unmarked spur. Descend, cross a long footbridge over Jakes Creek, then climb about 50 yards to the cabin. The round trip is roughly 2 miles on an easy-to-moderate grade, with a brief steep section on the spur.
History Snapshot
Built in 1845 by Humphrey Ownby, the cabin was purchased by Frank Avent in 1918. Mayna Treanor Avent began using it as a summer studio in 1919 and continued into the 1940s. The park acquired the property in 1932, with the Avent family retaining a lifetime lease and using the cabin until 1992. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
Conditions & Etiquette
The spur trail and footbridge can be slick and muddy after wet weather. Inside the cabin, enjoy the register and interpretive materials but leave everything as you found it—this is a preserved historic site, not a museum you can rearrange.
