“You're approaching the Discovery Centre in Woody Point. If the park's unusual rocks have you curious, start with the Story in Stone exhibit; it connects what you see outdoors to the forces that shaped it.”

More about Gros Morne National Park Discovery Centre

Start with the rocksThe Discovery Centre is Parks Canada’s visitor and interpretation centre in Woody Point, on…

The Discovery Centre is Parks Canada’s visitor and interpretation centre in Woody Point, on NL-431 in Gros Morne National Park. It’s a good first stop if you want to understand the landscape before spending the day driving or hiking; the subject here is the park itself, not just one lookout. Start with the Story in Stone exhibit. It traces how continental drift exposed deep ocean crust and Earth’s mantle in Gros Morne, the geological story behind the park’s UNESCO World Heritage designation. Later glaciers cut fjords, valleys, cliffs, waterfalls and lakes into that ancient geology. Seeing the story laid out indoors gives the rest of a Gros Morne day something to connect back to: the rocks are a big part of why the scenery looks the way it does.

More than geologyDon’t treat it as a geology-only stop.

Don’t treat it as a geology-only stop. The centre’s exhibits range from plants and moose and caribou to marine and Arctic life. Miawpukek: The Middle River shares stories and traditions of the Conne River Mi’kmaw community on Newfoundland’s south coast. That adds a human story alongside the landscape, which is easy to miss when a park day turns into a string of viewpoints and hikes. There’s a theatre here as well, so leave room to look around rather than making a quick dash through the geology displays. The centre works well before a drive into the park or as a weather break between outdoor stops.

A useful pause in Woody PointUse the centre for orientation as much as the exhibits: visitor information, park passes and…

Use the centre for orientation as much as the exhibits: visitor information, park passes and permits are available here, and washrooms are listed among the facilities. There’s a café and gift shop, plus outdoor picnic tables and a deck. The café is useful as a pause, though it’s not a place to plan a particular meal around. If you want to sit outside, use the tables or deck before heading back to the road. The deck has a view, but the named mountain panorama people come for is farther up Lookout Trail. The location is practical too: the centre is in Woody Point on Route 431, with the trail parking right here.

Choose your walkLookout Trail starts at the Discovery Centre parking lot.

Lookout Trail starts at the Discovery Centre parking lot. It’s a 5-kilometre return loop with 363 metres of elevation gain: the route climbs steadily through forest, then opens onto a highland plateau and the viewpoint platform atop Partridgeberry Hill. From there the view takes in Bonne Bay, Gros Morne Mountain, the Tablelands and Lookout Hills. This is a real uphill outing, not a quick leg-stretch between exhibits, so plan the trail as its own stop. A national park entry pass is required for the hike.

If that climb isn’t for you, the gentler walk to Em Tapper Look-off and the community trail into Woody Point offers another way out from the area, past old cemeteries and a regional lookout. You can still get value from the centre without hiking: give Story in Stone some time, add the Mi’kmaw exhibition, then pick the walk that suits your day.
