Before you go

Plan around building access

The grounds are open to visitors, but building entry depends on staff being on site. If you want to see inside or join a tour, check the interpretive programming schedule first; guided tours are available on request. The outside visit still makes sense when buildings are closed: you can see the fish store, cabin and coast together. Broom Point is accessed from Route 430 near St. Pauls, inside Gros Morne National Park, where a park entry pass is required. Don’t assume an interior visit is available without checking ahead.

Broom Point Fishing Premises is a restored inshore fishing station on a rocky point in Gros Morne National Park, reached from Route 430 near St. Pauls. Its fish store and single cabin sit close to the shore, with grass, low rock ledges and open water around them. This is a good stop if you want the park’s human story in a place where the work buildings are still part of the setting. The experience centers on the small scale of one coastal station and the routines that held it together. Look at the cabin and store as a pair: one was home, the other the center of the fishery. Broom Point makes the seasonal work behind Newfoundland’s inshore communities concrete.

From 1941 to 1975, the three Mudge brothers and their families used Broom Point as a summer home. The station was seasonal, with fishing from mid-April through August; in fall the family returned to Norris Point for winter. They shared one small cabin without water or electricity. The fish store held the work side of the station. The family fished salmon and herring and added lobster in spring, then preserved food for the months away from the shore. Women and children made fish, canned lobster and tended gardens for winter stores. Canned salmon and lobster were shipped to American markets. It’s a vivid example of how a family’s year followed the fishing season, with catching, preserving and growing food tied to the same stretch of coast.

The grounds include the rocky point, a garden tucked into tuckamore and a cemetery in a nearby cove. Those details make this feel like a lived-in place, not just a workplace preserved for visitors. The shore matters too: the station sits beside exposed rock and open water, and the weather changes the feel of the point. Low tide is the recommended time to explore the shore. On calm days it can feel quiet; with rough seas, waves break against the rocks. For a photo, step back far enough to keep the fish store with the rocky edge and water in frame. A tight building portrait misses the relationship between the station and the coast that sustained it.
