Riders often praise the trail condition, though rocky stretches and steep climbs are part of the experience. Horses may use forest roads or designated bridle trails, and riding or hiking on bridle trails is not allowed after dark. Bring a bridle map before heading out; a visitor found the map hard to locate at camp and said some viewpoints were not clearly marked.

This camp is in Hocking State Forest, not the separate Hocking Hills State Park campground. The park was split off from the forest in 1949. Forest lands here began to be acquired in 1924 for forestry demonstrations, and later conservation work, including Civilian Conservation Corps projects, helped restore the cut-over land.
