Overview
Despite the name, this one sits just outside the main park in Hocking State Forest near Conkle’s Hollow. Airplane Rock (also called Bear’s Head Rock) is a sandstone ledge that, from the right angle, really does resemble a plane’s nose and wing. From the top you get a broad look over Crane Hollow and the surrounding hemlock‑fringed forest.
Getting There
Most hikers reach it via the orange‑blazed bridle trails off Big Pine Road. A reliable option is the large gravel lot for the Rock Climbing & Rappelling Area on Big Pine; smaller parking exists on Hockman Road and a tiny pull‑off by an orange gate on Big Pine. Expect a rolling, mostly wide path with horse traffic. Near the end you’ll pass a fence and a “NO HORSES BEYOND THIS POINT” sign—walk the people‑only path a short distance to the cliff.
What You’ll See
Up top, the ledge juts out over the valley with a 180‑degree viewpoint of Crane Hollow. Some visitors find the view partially framed by trees, but the cliff feel and the airplane silhouette make it a fun, photogenic stop.
Trail Notes & Safety
These are equestrian trails, so mud is common year‑round and footing can be churned up. Share the right‑of‑way with riders. The final approach skirts unguarded cliff edges with roots underfoot—move carefully, especially if it’s wet.
Amenities
There’s no building or restroom at the big gravel lot. On‑trail near Airplane Rock you’ll find a simple pit latrine/wooden outhouse and hitching posts. For more reliable facilities, Conkle’s Hollow has vault toilets a short drive away.
Wildlife & Flora
Deer and butterflies are common sights along the route. Look for light green reindeer moss near the treeline on the rock itself.
Make It A Loop
Many pair Airplane Rock with Chapel Cave (a.k.a. 21 Horse Cave) for a rewarding half‑day circuit on the orange bridle network.
Best Time to Visit
It’s open 24 hours, but daylight is smartest for footing near the cliffs. Weekdays or early morning are your best bet for a quieter experience and easier parking.
