Stutfield Glacier Viewpoint is a roadside pullout on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) in Jasper National Park, facing Stutfield Glacier as it descends from the Columbia Icefield. The view starts at the road, and you can photograph it from your vehicle; it’s a useful short stop rather than a hike. The glacier can look distant for close detail, so bring binoculars or a zoom lens if you want to pick out its ice features.
The glacier drops through two icefalls toward a broad gravel valley, where the Sunwapta River splits into braided channels. For the best sense of scale, keep the river flats in the lower edge of a wide frame; a tight glacier crop loses the relationship between the ice and valley.
Stutfield is one of the glaciers fed by the Columbia Icefield, a mass of more than 300 square kilometres. The icefield lost nearly 13.3% of its ice between 1985 and 2024; that figure describes the whole icefield, not a measured change at Stutfield alone.
About 11,000 years ago, ice filled and scoured most Jasper valleys. This broad mountain basin is part of that larger glacial landscape, still visible from the pullout today.
