Hiking Hilda Creek to Hilda Glacier

What you reachHilda Creek to Hilda Glacier is an informal out-and-back from a pullout on the Icefields…

Hilda Creek to Hilda Glacier is an informal out-and-back from a pullout on the Icefields Parkway to moraine and mud flats below Hilda Glacier. The stored route follows 2.5 km (1.56 miles) each way, about 5 km (3.1 miles) total, climbing roughly 225 m along the creek valley. It is a short way into the glacial landscape, not a route onto the ice or up Hilda Peak. Allow about two to three hours for the climb, uneven ground and a stop at the flats.

Finding the pathThe route starts at the Hilda Creek pullout on Highway 93N, roughly 8 km south of the Icefields…

The route starts at the Hilda Creek pullout on Highway 93N, roughly 8 km south of the Icefields Centre. The documented approach crosses the creek by road to the gravel access on the west side, then follows an unmarked path past an open area to the right of the hostel outhouse. Public day-use access to this hostel connection has not been confirmed, so check for posted restrictions before leaving the pullout.

Along Hilda CreekThe path climbs through forest beside Hilda Creek.

The path climbs through forest beside Hilda Creek. Reports describe a well-trodden trail with bridges, but their present condition is unverified. The wooded creek corridor gives way to open gravel and mud flats as the route reaches the moraine. Expect the short distance to feel more demanding than a level stroll because the trail gains about 225 m.

Stop at the moraineAt roughly 2.5 km, the approach reaches the moraine and mud flats below the glacier.

At roughly 2.5 km, the approach reaches the moraine and mud flats below the glacier. Hilda Glacier and the surrounding peaks are visible ahead, though the glacier's ice is farther away; this route does not reach the ice. Turn back along the same creek corridor. The Hilda Peak climb and the off-trail traverse from Parker Ridge are separate, more demanding routes.
