Trail guide
Boundary Lake Trail is an unmarked out-and-back from a Highway 93 pullout to a small lake beneath Mount Athabasca near the Banff–Jasper boundary. The mapped tread is about 0.62 mi each way, so this record counts 1.23 mi (2.0 km) round trip on that line. Other hike descriptions quote 1.6–1.9 mi; their tracks were not verified against this mapped route, so the outing may be longer, especially if you explore the shore. Allow about an hour. This is an informal path, not a signed or confirmed maintained trail; check current park guidance before setting out.
The unmarked pullout is about 4.3–4.5 km south of the Icefields Discovery Centre near the Sunwapta Pass boundary sign. Start from its west side. A faint path crosses marshy open ground and scrub, meets an old dirt or gravel road, then continues through forest to the lake. The entrance can be hard to spot, and route descriptions disagree on exactly where to leave the old road, so treat turn distances as approximate and follow the visible tread.
The payoff is blue-green water with forested shore and snow- and glacier-covered peaks behind it. A walk around the north end is optional and adds distance; no formal shore loop is established. No food, drinking water, or toilet facilities were verified at the pullout or on the route. The exact pet rule for this informal path is also unconfirmed, so check park restrictions before bringing a dog.
