Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre

The Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre is the indoor visitor hub on the Icefields Parkway, 103 km south of Jasper. Its information desk and Glacier Gallery face the Athabasca Glacier across the valley. It is a good place to get oriented and take an indoor break on a remote stretch of road. The centre shares its campus with glacier tour check-in and other attractions, so keep the building, the glacier and the paid activities straight when you plan.

Guided trips onto the Athabasca Glacier and the Columbia Icefield Skywalk start from the centre; both are separate paid activities. If you have booked a tour, arrive 30 minutes before departure and follow the parking directions for that experience, since different attractions use different lots. Summer is the busiest time, so leave some slack for check-in and food. The Glacier Gallery and the marked trails across the parkway offer ways to spend time here without joining a tour.

Altitude is the sit-down restaurant, serving Canadian cuisine, while the Chalet has casual self-serve hot food. There is also a gift shop and indoor washrooms. Visitors often praise the staff and guides for being friendly and informative, which helps when you are sorting out the tour options or the roads ahead.

The Columbia Icefield is the largest icefield in the Canadian Rockies, a remnant of the much thicker ice that once covered these mountains. The Athabasca Glacier spills over three giant bedrock steps before reaching the valley opposite the centre. It has been retreating for well over a century, leaving rocky moraines behind; this is one of the easiest places to see what that change looks like on the ground.

The trailheads are across the road from the centre. The Forefield Trail is a 3.6 km return walk, about an hour with little elevation gain, across boulders and moraine exposed since the mid-1840s. The Toe of the Glacier Trail is 1.8 km return with about 60 m of climbing and reaches a rock bench near the ice. These are independent walks, not part of the paid tours. Stay on the marked routes and behind barriers; don't walk onto the glacier except through permitted guided access.

The Glacier Gallery opened in 2018 and was later redeveloped to showcase large-format glacier photography. Pair it with a look outside, where the ice and bare moraine make a striking contrast. This is a remote part of the Parkway with limited services and no cell coverage, so sort out navigation before you leave town. The information desk, gallery and commercial experiences keep different seasonal schedules; check the one you need before planning around a visit.
