Siskiwit Bay Campground

This backcountry campground sits on Siskiwit Bay at Isle Royale’s southwest end. Its nine campsites are all walk-to or boat-to, with two shelters; the campground lies off the Island Mine and Feldtmann Ridge trails. You can arrive on foot, by canoe or kayak, or by private boat, so plan it as part of an island route rather than a drive-up stop.

An overnight permit is required. Campsites are first come, first served for parties of six or fewer and boaters; groups of seven or more need advance reservations. The stay limit is three nights from June 1 through Labor Day. Food-storage lockers are available year-round, but water is nonpotable, and there is no camp store or ice or firewood for sale. The park’s island campgrounds have outhouses. Bring food and drinking water, or a way to make water safe. There is no cell or internet service, trash collection, or staff on site.

Boats can overnight at the dock, where the listed depth under normal conditions is 2–6 feet. The bay is the point of stopping here: the Lake Superior shore is for a cold-water swim, and the dock is a natural place to linger as evening light changes over the open water.

In 1935, Mead Timber Company logs were stacked along roughly a mile of shore toward Checker Point, viewed from the location now occupied by the campground dock. It is a striking industrial chapter in the story of a place now reached by trail or water, with no road access.
